Mabrey led the Lunar Owls with 33 points and six 3-pointers, while Diggins added a career-high 30 points, eight rebounds and five 3-pointers.
“I was really proud of this group this year,” Diggins said. “Obviously we didn’t get to go into the playoffs, but finishing the season on a high note is something that we talked about.”
The Hive were led by Aziaha James, who scored a career-high 23 points. Kelsey Mitchell added 20 points, including four triples.
Monique Billings recorded 16 points and 15 rebounds to set the single-season double-double record. Billings finished the season with 10 double-doubles and credited her mentorship by Lisa Leslie as a major factor for achieving the milestone.
“I think something that really empowered me this season was being able to work with Lisa Leslie,” Billings said. “Those double-doubles came from conversations with her. She really just lit a fire underneath me.”
The Lunar Owls began the game on an 11-2 run sparked by eight early points from Mabrey. Diggins and Mabrey combined for the Lunar Owls first 18 points, helping the club take a 25-19 lead after one.
James scored 12 points in the second quarter for the Hive while Mabrey put up 13, giving the Lunar Owls a 52-40 halftime advantage. Mabrey finished the first half with 21 points while Billings tallied a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds by the break.
In the third quarter, James and Mitchell combined for the Hive’s first ten points of the half, narrowing the deficit to single digits. Mabrey responded with 10 points as the Lunar Owls pushed their lead to 17 by the end of the period.
Mitchell scored 11 points in the fourth, getting the Hive within 10. Diggins then sealed the game with a 3-pointer to give the Lunar Owls their fourth and final win of the year.
Lunar Owls BC head coach DJ Sackmann praised his club’s perseverance this season.
“We had to deal with a lot this season.” Sackmann said. “Minutes restrictions, injuries–we fought every single night, we showed up to practice, games, and we competed—I’m really proud of the group.”
The Hive’s first year in Unrivaled concludes with a 4-10 record. Hive BC head coach Rena Wakama reflected on her inaugural season.
“One thing I know I got right is the people that I chose to be on this team and this staff that I chose to help me,” Wakama said. “I’m super thankful for the relationship we built here.”
